Do I have to cancel my appointment if I am on my period?
Absolutely not. As long as you are feeling well enough to come in for your appointment, your physio will still be able to treat you both externally and internally, as needed. If you would prefer to not have an internal assessment/treatment at this point, simply say so - there is plenty more "external" options!
I am pregnant, how soon should I start pelvic physiotherapy?
You can start as soon as you feel comfortable to! I typically recommend checking in at least once per trimester.
I just had my baby, how soon can I start/resume pelvic physiotherapy?
You can book an appointment as soon as you are ready. Internal assessments and treatments can resume around 6 weeks postpartum however, there are plenty of tips and tricks that can help reduce discomfort and unwanted symptoms prior to this!
Is this covered under OHIP or insurance?
Our treatments are not covered under OHIP however they are covered through extended health care benefits. Pelvic Health Physiotherapy falls under "Physiotherapy" coverage, which is included in most plans. Contact your provider if you have any specific questions regarding your coverage.
Do I have to have an internal exam?
Absolutely not. If the internal exam is a source of stress, anxiety or you simply do not want to have it done, your physiotherapist will gladly assess and treat you externally. Of note, a pelvic floor physiotherapy assessment/treatment does not require the use of a speculum and therefore it is often less uncomfortable than most other pelvic exams.
How long is the assessment and subsequent follow ups?
The initial assessment is 1 hour long and follow ups range from 30-45 minutes.
